Room Guide
Spa energy, real budget — how to make your bathroom feel like a genuine retreat.
The bathroom is the room most people spend the least design energy on — and yet it's where you start and end every day. A few intentional changes, none of which require a renovation, can transform a functional bathroom into a room that genuinely restores you.
Towels are one of the most visible elements in a bathroom — and most people treat them as purely functional. Invest in a few sets of quality towels in a consistent neutral palette (white, cream, warm grey, or stone) and fold or hang them intentionally. A neatly rolled set in a basket, or a set of matching towels hung on a ladder rail, elevates the whole room without a single renovation.
Bathrooms are one of the best rooms in the house for plants — the humidity suits many tropical varieties perfectly. A trailing pothos on a high shelf, a snake plant in a corner, or a small fern on the vanity adds life and warmth that no accessory can replicate. Even a single stem in a bud vase on the edge of the bath changes the atmosphere of the room.
A bathroom with clear surfaces feels like a spa. A bathroom with products, razors, and half-empty bottles on every surface feels like a medicine cabinet. Move daily-use items into a drawer or cabinet, keep only one or two beautiful objects on the vanity, and store everything else out of sight. The transformation is immediate and costs nothing.
You don't need to retile to transform a bathroom. Swapping out hardware — towel rails, toilet roll holder, hooks — for a consistent finish (brushed brass, matte black, or unlacquered bronze) creates a cohesion that makes the room feel designed. A new mirror, a soap dispenser that matches the hardware, and a diffuser with a scent you love — these small changes add up to a room that feels genuinely considered.
"A bathroom with clear surfaces and a single beautiful plant feels more luxurious than one full of expensive products."
