Home Office

Work beautifully — how to design a workspace that's productive and genuinely pleasant to be in.

A well-designed home office makes every workday better. Not just more productive — genuinely better. The right light, a chair that supports you, a space that feels separate from the rest of your home, and an aesthetic that you actually enjoy looking at: these things add up to a workspace you want to be in, and that makes all the difference.

Natural light, a clear desk surface, and a plant or two — the simplest formula for a workspace that feels good.

Four principles for a home office that works

01

Prioritise Natural Light

Natural light is the single most important factor in a productive home office. Position your desk to face or be adjacent to a window — never with the window directly behind your screen, which creates glare. If natural light is limited, invest in a quality daylight bulb (5000–6500K) for task lighting. The quality of light in your workspace affects your energy, focus, and mood more than almost any other design decision.

02

Separate Work from Rest

The home office works best when it has a clear visual and physical boundary from the rest of your home. Even in a studio apartment, a dedicated desk area with its own rug, its own light, and its own aesthetic signals to your brain that this is where work happens. When you leave it, you leave work. This separation — even a symbolic one — is one of the most important things you can do for your mental health when working from home.

03

Invest in the Chair

You can have the most beautiful desk in the world, but if your chair is uncomfortable, you'll be miserable within an hour. An ergonomic chair that supports your lower back, positions your hips at 90 degrees, and keeps your screen at eye level is not a luxury — it's a necessity. If budget is tight, prioritise the chair over everything else in the room. Your body will thank you.

04

Make It Beautiful

A home office you actually want to sit in is a home office you'll actually use. A few plants, a piece of art you love, a shelf styled with books and objects that inspire you — these details matter. The aesthetic of your workspace affects your mood and your output. Don't treat it as purely functional. Make it a room you're glad to spend time in, and the work will follow.
